Clubs
are something everyone can take part in, there’s usually something going on
every day of the week, and on Fridays you can fill that early dismissal with
the D&D club. You may ask “what’s the D&D club?” The D&D club is to
put it simply, a club where you play Dungeons and Dragons, now that might bring
up a few more questions, so here’s the run down of it. Dungeons and Dragons is
a role-playing game where you make up your own journey and play through it with
friends. According to the website for Dungeons and Dragons its main objective
is storytelling, either through a world of the appointed “Dungeon Master” or
through the world of the novels that authors have written for the game. You
play the game with a character that you create using imagination and a few
rolls of a dice if you like.
Upon
first entering the club, you can see that there are several different groups,
and everyone seems to gravitate towards other people, when I sat down the
student next to me explained where they were in the campaign and what happened
at the meeting before, or at the session before as they’re called, and told me
“Welcome to this zany group of people” which made me feel rather welcomed to a
place I had never been before. In the club there were 3 groups of people, all
playing different campaigns catered to the group’s interests and humor.
Humor
seemed to be a big part of the campaigns as well, the group I sat with had a
tinge of humor in their campaign while sticking to the rules and lore of
D&D, while the others were a bit more serious, but they all still were
influenced by humor. I could tell that everyone was getting a long well and
having a fun time just by the amount of people just talking, it was more than
just the Dungeon Masters saying things that the group could do and getting a
single response or just a bit of muttering from the group, it was more of a
constant flow of talking back and forth about the game and what they could do.
People all around had their own points to talk about and their own opinion on
how to take a certain event during their game may it be rolling a 20-sided dice
to pickpocket someone or rolling for persuasion to sway a person in the game.
There
was a lot of things to take in when starting to play DND, mostly rules, but
other than that knowing what to do and seeing what your friends will think of
in a situation brings an interesting element of teamwork to the game. Outside
of your team, the entire game is controller by a Dungeon Master and they are
the ones who make the story and play as the non-player characters, its their
goal to make the game as fun or as challenging as well as make an interesting
story. Each of the Dungeon Masters in the club had a wildly different story in
their game, and as I said, it’s all based on the players who are participating.
There was a large sense or, friendliness and it felt like a lot of people were
there just to have a fun time with other people. The entire time I was feeling
welcomed and didn’t feel like an outcast, it was a great environment to be in
and there was a lot of fun being had.
